An alternative to managing your own credit card debt.

The Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCCS) is a non-profit United Way community service organization offering debt consolidation, debt management, budget counseling, and money management assistance free or at a low-cost. Creditors have a vested interest in recouping the money owed by their customers; therefore the CCCS can assist in resolving issues with creditors. CCCS will contact your debtors (credit card companies) on your behalf explaining your situation and requesting to drop late fees, reduce your interest rate, or even possibly dropping the interest rate (depending upon the creditor's approval). CCCS is not a lending institution, simply a mediator and organizer. Contact the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), 800-388-2227 or http://www.nfcc.org, to determine a local CCCS in your area.

NOTE: Many companies around the country perform the same service and have a similar name, but they are not part of the NFCC. Therefore, ensure the company is an official NFCC Member if you are interested in a non-profit company.
